Sustainable print transformation across a historic campus

About University of St Andrews

Founded in 1413, the University of St Andrews is Scotland’s first university and a global leader in environmental strategy. With a commitment to reaching net zero carbon by 2035, sustainability is embedded into every decision.

Agilico partnered with the University to deliver a managed print solution aligned with circular economy principles.

The Objective

The University required a partner capable of delivering:

Scope 3 carbon reduction

Aligning the print refresh with the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and circular procurement goals.

Responsive support

A proven, dependable support model with local delivery capability and rapid issue resolution.

Logistical expertise

The ability to manage a rollout across 170 buildings, including many historic sites with restricted access.

The Results

Agilico assessed device volumes and energy performance across the diverse campus estate. To meet the University’s circular-first requirement – where sustainability accounted for 15 per cent of the quality score in the tender – Agilico proposed a blended fleet approach.

This demonstrated that sustainability does not require a compromise on quality.

We haven’t told users that these are refurbished devices and they would never know. They look brand new and perform to a high standard. When we do tell people, they’re amazed.

The Solution: A Blended Fleet

As a vendor-agnostic provider, Agilico proposed a blended fleet of Ricoh devices. This was suggested as it was the best option for the University of St Andrews from our wide portfolio of products. This consisted of:

  • 131 Agilico Zero ‘as-new’ Ricoh A3 MFDs – fully remanufactured and tested to OEM standards
  • 21 brand new Ricoh A4 MFDs – for specialist or lower-use areas
  • PaperCut MF – print management software providing secure authentication and detailed reporting
  • Lifetime guarantee – a full guarantee on all Agilico Zero devices to ensure long-term peace of mind

The Delivery

The rollout was delivered through a phased installation coordinated with the University’s IT Services and Estates teams.

On-site presence – Agilico engineers and trainers were visible across campus throughout deployment to ensure users felt supported.

Test bed – prior to rollout, a test environment allowed users to verify that functionality met institutional requirements.

The speed of response is stunningly fast. It adds up to a level of professionalism that makes them an outstanding supplier.

The Results

Environmental and financial impact

Carbon avoidance – 69.64 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided, equivalent to planting 3,482 trees.
Refurbishment benefits – remanufactured devices reduce manufacturing carbon emissions by up to 97.5 per cent compared with new production.
Energy savings – an 84.3 per cent reduction in electricity consumption, saving over £5,000 across the contract term.

Summary

The University of St Andrews partnered with Agilico to deliver a managed print service that prioritises responsive support, strong customer care, and on-site expertise, while also advancing its sustainability ambitions.

With a large and complex campus, the University needed confidence that print services would be reliable, well supported, and easy for staff and students to use. Alongside this, the University sought a solution that aligned with its commitment to net zero by 2035 and supported circular economy principles.

Agilico delivered a blended fleet of Agilico Zero and new Ricoh devices, supported by PaperCut MF, underpinned by a visible on-site presence, highly rated training sessions, and a proactive support model.

The result is a print environment that delivers measurable carbon reduction, significant energy savings, and what the University considers to be one of the strongest service and support experiences across its contracted services.
